The Melbourne Men’s Group together with the Albert Park Women’s meeting convened an open public information meeting on 11th October 2019. The purpose of the meeting was to create awareness to members of the public, medical, professional and families the role Alcoholics Anonymous plays in the treatment and recovery from the age old problem of alcoholism. Around 70 people attended the event and were provided with information packs relating to what AA does and how it can help. The format of the night was that a non alcoholic Psychologist spoke about AA, alcoholism and the recovery from a professional perspective. Two AA members, one male and one female provided a personal account of their journey in recovery. An Al-Anon member (Al-Anon being the support for families of those who suffer from the effects of a family member afflicted with alcoholism) spoke on their experience with gaining help for the family, this was followed by an Al-Ateen sponsor (a person that works with young children from alcoholic homes) also spoke on the benefits of this program.
Below is a recording of the nights information meeting.
